Just a quick belated note to say that I support Vafa's position, and I use xelatex to write Hebrew with vowels.

I still believe that markup is much better than automatic bidi because bidi typesetting is very complex and sometimes you are not able to say character X is a RTL character or an LTR one.

בנוסף, כיוון אלגוריתם כיווניות של xelatex שבור ולא תואם את התקן של Unicode אז יש
בעיות
בשילוב של עברית ואנגלית. (BiDiTeX פותר אותם נכון לעכשיו הרבה יותר טוב).
