*The Gaussian Content: an alternative method of evaluating the quality of
coherent beams*
The definition of a parameter that evaluates the quality of laser beams has
been a controversial issue for more than two decades. Presently there is a
widespread consensus that there is no single beam quality parameter suitable
for all scenarios, and therefore, specific quality factors are often defined
and chosen by practical considerations depending on the application. From
all the proposed options the M2 factor gained recognition as the best
acknowledged quality parameter for laser beams and even acquired
standardization. In some instances however the M2 parameter happened to be
inadequate for describing the suitability of a source for important
applications one of them being Coherent Beam Combining*. *In this talk, I
will briefly critically review some of the common figures of merit for
evaluating laser beams, and propose a new parameter: The Gaussian Content.
As defined it is suited for applications where the coherence properties of
light at the target are of preference. The coherent combination of an array
of laser beams and the optimal coupling between a diode laser and a
single-mode fiber (SMF) will be elaborated as application examples.
Experimental results on the measurement of the Gaussian Content and its
conservation upon propagation will be shown.
